Omeprazole is a type of medication known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), and is primarily used to treat stomach and esophagus problems related to acidity. It does so by blocking a system in the cells of your stomach, called the proton pump, which decreases the amount of acid your stomach makes. Omeprazole is sold under the brand name Losec.

Omeprazole relieves symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough due to acid reflux. This medication helps heal acid damage to the stomach and esophagus and helps prevent ulcers.

Omeprazole is available as a capsule, tablet, or liquid solution and should be taken as directed by a doctor. Prescription omeprazole should be taken at least 1 hour before a meal and is usually taken once a day. However, it can be taken twice a day when used with other medications to eliminate H. pylori. Capsule forms come in doses varying from 10mg to 40mg.

As your body adjusts to the medication, omeprazole may cause:
